*Overcoming the Accuser*

*A Bible Study from Psalms 3 & 4 and Revelation 12*

*Opening Hymn*

“O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end;

Be Thou forever near me, my Master and my Friend.”

What a tender confession — My Savior and my Friend. The Christian walk is not about defending ourselves, but about walking closely with Jesus, our Friend and Keeper.

Key Scripture

Psalm 4:2 

> O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.

மனுபுத்திரரே, எதுவரைக்கும் என் மகிமையை அவமானப்படுத்தி, வீணானதை விரும்பி, பொய்யை நாடுவீர்கள். (சேலா.)

*Background of Psalms 3 & 4*

Psalms 3 and 4 were written during the same painful season in David’s life.

Psalm 3 is a morning psalm:

> “I laid me down and slept; I awaked…” 

(Ps 3:5)

நான் படுத்து நித்திரை செய்தேன், விழித்துக்கொண்டேன், கர்த்தர் என்னைத் தாங்குகிறார். 

சங்கீதம் 3:5

Psalm 4 is an evening psalm:

> “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep…” (Ps 4:8)

சமாதானத்தோடே படுத்துக்கொண்டு நித்திரைசெய்வேன், கர்த்தாவே, நீர் ஒருவரே என்னைச் சுகமாய்த் தங்கப்பண்ணுகிறீர்.

David’s troubles begin in Psalm 3 and settle in Psalm 4.

These psalms show us something powerful:

👉 David starts the day with trouble, but ends the day with trust.

*The Nature of David’s Trouble*

David was not attacked face‑to‑face. People were talking about him, not to him.

They spoke of his soul, not to his soul.

They did not ask for clarification.

They spread rumors.

They took counsel together.

Psalm 22:7 – “All they that see me laugh me to scorn.”

Psalm 71:11 – “They say, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him.”

தேவன் அவனைக் கைவிட்டார் அவனைத் தொடர்ந்துபிடியுங்கள், அவனை விடுவிப்பார் இல்லை என்கிறார்கள்.

These are not honest questioners — they are slanderers.

What Is Slander?

The Greek word for slander is Diabolos — the same word used for the devil.

Devil = Slanderer

Accuser

Character assassin

Relentless talker

In Tamil the word often used is “Pisāsu / Pisassi”, meaning evil spirit or demon — showing how closely slander is linked with spiritual darkness.

Revelation 12:9–10 says Satan is:

உலகமனைத்தையும் மோசம்போக்குகிற பிசாசு என்றும் சாத்தான் என்றும் சொல்லப்பட்ட பழைய பாம்பாகிய பெரிய வலுசர்ப்பம் தள்ளப்பட்டது, அது பூமியிலே விழத்தள்ளப்பட்டது, அதனோடேகூட அதைச்சேர்ந்த தூதரும் தள்ளப்பட்டார்கள்.

அப்பொழுது வானத்திலே ஒரு பெரிய சத்தமுண்டாகி: இப்பொழுது இரட்சிப்பும் வல்லமையும் நமது தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யமும், அவருடைய கிறிஸ்துவின் அதிகாரமும் உண்டாயிருக்கிறது, இரவும் பகலும் நம்முடைய தேவனுக்கு முன்பாக நம்முடைய சகோதரர்மேல் குற்றஞ் சுமத்தும்பொருட்டு அவர்கள்மேல் குற்றஞ்சாட்டுகிறவன் தாழத்தள்ளப்பட்டுப்போனான்.

மரணம் நேரிடுகிறதாயிருந்தாலும் அதற்குத் தப்பும்படி தங்கள் ஜீவனையும் பாராமல், ஆட்டுக்குட்டியின் இரத்தத்தினாலும் தங்கள் சாட்சியின் வசனத்தினாலும் அவனை ஜெயித்தார்கள்.

> “The accuser of our brethren… which accused them before our God day and night.”

Slander is:

Backbiting

Gossip

Speaking evil with motive

Talking endlessly about others’ faults

When believers slander, they imitate the devil instead of Christ.

*Three Kinds of Talkers*

1. Slanderers – Always discussing others negatively.

2. Self‑lamenters – Only talking about their own problems, pains, and complaints.

3. World talkers – Talking about everything except Jesus: food, politics, weather, sports, money.

Very few believers talk beautifully about God.

*A holy question: 👉 “Am I such a person?”*

Why Slander Hurts So Deeply

It discourages the heart.

It attacks reputation.

It makes a believer feel helpless.

It pushes people toward self‑defense instead of trust.

David felt surrounded:

Psalm 3:1 – “Lord, how are they increased that trouble me!”

Psalm 4:2 – “How long will ye turn my glory into shame?”

David’s glory was not fame — God Himself was David’s glory (Ps 3:3).

When people slander a believer, they are touching God’s glory.

*God’s Way of Victory*

David does not fight people — he goes to God.

Revelation 12:11 gives us three weapon

அப்பொழுது வானத்திலே ஒரு பெரிய சத்தமுண்டாகி: இப்பொழுது இரட்சிப்பும் வல்லமையும் நமது தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யமும், அவருடைய கிறிஸ்துவின் அதிகாரமும் உண்டாயிருக்கிறது, இரவும் பகலும் நம்முடைய தேவனுக்கு முன்பாக நம்முடைய சகோதரர்மேல் குற்றஞ் சுமத்தும்பொருட்டு அவர்கள்மேல் குற்றஞ்சாட்டுகிறவன் தாழத்தள்ளப்பட்டுப்போனான்.

*1️⃣ The Blood of the Lamb*

Jesus keeps washing us.

Sanctification is His work.

> “Christ is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” (1 Cor 1:30)

Clearing my name is not my job — the blood does it.

*2️⃣ The Word of Our Testimony*

Instead of explaining ourselves, we keep speaking about Jesus.

Praise Him.

Share His goodness.

Testify of His faithfulness.

When accusation increases, worship should increase.

*3️⃣ Not Loving Our Reputation*

> “They loved not their lives unto the death.”

We stop protecting self‑image. We stop demanding justice. We stop chasing vindication.

We choose the cross over reputation.

*Leasing — Lying Tongues and Deception*

In Psalm 4:2 David says people seek after “leasing.”

Leasing means falsehood, cheating, deception, and lying speech.

These are people who are:

Untrue

Manipulative

Unclean in motive

Dangerous in influence

A modern reminder is Kasab, the terrorist involved in the Taj Hotel attack. His life showed what happens when truth is abandoned — deception grows into destruction.

Slander and lies are never harmless; they slowly turn hearts violent, careless, and cruel.

When believers lie or exaggerate, they unknowingly walk the same road of deception.

*David’s Selah — The Holy Pause*

Psalm 4:2 ends with Selah.

மனுபுத்திரரே, எதுவரைக்கும் என் மகிமையை அவமானப்படுத்தி, வீணானதை விரும்பி, பொய்யை நாடுவீர்கள். (சேலா.) 

சங்கீதம் 4:2

It means:

Pause

Reflect

Let God speak

David breathes, stops reacting, and starts trusting.

Before answering people, we pause before God.

*Practical Applications*

Do not slander back.

Do not curse people.

Do not demand to clear your name.

Keep your mouth full of Jesus.

Let the blood of Christ do the cleaning.

Accept misunderstanding peacefully.

Sleep in peace like David.

*Closing Reflection*

> “Lord, make me a believer who speaks beautifully about You.

> Not about others.

> Not only about myself.

*But about Jesus — my Savior and my Friend.”*

> When people accuse you, don’t defend yourself — display Jesus.
