*When God’s Word Is Ignored and God’s Ark Is Used*

(1 Samuel 4:1–11 -

 The Philistines Capture the Ark)

சாமுவேலின் வார்த்தை இஸ்ரவேலுக்கெல்லாம் வந்தது. இஸ்ரவேலர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு விரோதமாய் யுத்தஞ்செய்யப் புறப்பட்டு, எபெனேசருக்குச் சமீபத்தில் பாளயமிறங்கினார்கள். பெலிஸ்தரோ ஆப்பெக்கிலே பாளயமிறங்கியிருந்தார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:1

பெலிஸ்தர் இஸ்ரவேலருக்கு விரோதமாய் அணிவகுத்து நின்றார்கள். யுத்தம் அதிகரித்து, இஸ்ரவேலர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு முன்பாக முறிய அடிக்கப்பட்டார்கள். அவர்கள் சேனையில் போர்க்களத்திலே ஏறக்குறைய நாலாயிரம்பேர் வெட்டுண்டு போனார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:2

ஜனங்கள் திரும்பப் பாளயத்துக்கு வந்தபோது, இஸ்ரவேலின் மூப்பரானவர்கள், இன்று கர்த்தர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு முன்பாக நம்மை முறிய அடித்ததென்ன? சீலோவிலிருக்கிற கர்த்தருடைய உடன்படிக்கைப்பெட்டியைக் கொண்டு வருவோம். அது நம்மை நம்முடைய பகைஞரின் கைக்கு விலக்கி ரட்சிக்கும்படி, நம்முடைய நடுவிலே வரவேண்டியது என்றார்கள 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:3

அப்படியே கேருபீன்களின் மத்தியிலே வாசமாயிருக்கிற சேனைகளின் கர்த்தருடைய உடன்படிக்கைப்பெட்டியை எடுத்துவர, ஜனங்கள் சீலோவுக்குச் சொல்லியனுப்பினார்கள். அங்கே ஏலியின் இரண்டு குமாரராகிய ஓப்னியும் பினெகாசும் தேவனுடைய உடன்படிக்கைப்பெட்டியண்டையில் இருந்தார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:4

கர்த்தருடைய உடன்படிக்கைப்பெட்டி பாளயத்திலே வருகிறபோது இஸ்ரவேலரெல்லாரும் பூமி அதிரத்தக்கதாக மகா ஆர்ப்பரிப்பாய்ச் சத்தமிட்டார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:5

அவர்கள் ஆர்ப்பரிக்கிற சத்தத்தைப் பெலிஸ்தர் கேட்டபோது: எபிரெயருடைய பாளயத்தில் இந்த மகா ஆர்ப்பரிப்பின் சத்தம் என்ன என்றார்கள். பின்பு கர்த்தரின் பெட்டி பாளயத்தில் வந்தது என்று அறிந்து கொண்டார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:6

தேவன் பாளயத்தில் வந்தார் என்று சொல்லப்பட்டபடியினால், பெலிஸ்தர் பயந்து ஐயோ நமக்கு மோசம் வந்தது. இதற்கு முன் ஒருபோதும் இப்படி நடக்கவில்லையே. 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:7

ஐயோ அந்த மகத்துவமான தேவர்களின் கைக்கு நம்மைத் தப்புவிப்பவர் யார்? எகிப்தியரைச் சகலவித வாதைகளினாலும் வனாந்தரத்திலே அடித்த தேவர்கள் இவர்கள் தானே. 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:8

பெலிஸ்தரே, திடன்கொண்டு புருஷரைப்போல நடந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். எபிரேயர் உங்களுக்கு அடிமைகளாயிருந்ததுபோல நீங்களும் அவர்களுக்கு அடிமைகளாகாதபடிக்கு, புருஷராயிருந்து யுத்தம்பண்ணுங்கள் என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:9

அப்பொழுது பெலிஸ்தர் யுத்தம்பண்ணினார்கள். இஸ்ரவேலர் முறிந்து அவரவர் தங்கள் கூடாரங்களுக்கு ஓடிப்போனார்கள். மகா பெரிய சங்காரம் உண்டாயிற்று. இஸ்ரவேலிலே முப்பதினாயிரம் காலாட்கள் விழுந்தார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:10

தேவனுடைய பெட்டி பிடிக்கப்பட்டது. ஏலியின் இரண்டு குமாரராகிய ஓப்னியும் பினெகாசும் மாண்டார்கள். 

1 சாமுவேல் 4:11

*Introduction*

This chapter records one of the darkest moments in Israel’s history. 

Outwardly, Israel appears religious; inwardly, they are spiritually disconnected. 

There is a prophet in the land, the word of the LORD is available, yet Israel goes to battle without seeking God.

1. A Remarkable Opening Line

1 Samuel 4:1 (KJV)

> “And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.”

This is a striking way to open a chapter.

> “The word of Samuel” is synonymous with “the word of the LORD.”

This truth was already established in the previous chapter.

1 Samuel 3:20 (KJV)

> “And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that 

Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.”

*Key truth:*

It is the LORD who establishes a man, not people.

2. *Establishment Comes From God, Not Man*

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

> “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

We are not called to be approved by people.

Man may withhold approval because of fear, carnality, jealousy, or lack of understanding.

God alone establishes.

*Two key words emerge:*

Establishment

Revelation

3. *Obedience Brings Revelation*

John 14:21 (KJV)

> “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”

Manifestation follows obedience.

God reveals Himself to those who walk in His word.

4. *Chapter Division Creates Confusion*

The phrase “And the word of Samuel came to all Israel” actually belongs to 1 Samuel 3, not chapter 4.

ASV ends the statement clearly with a full stop.

In Tamil and Kannada, the word “now” is absent.

In Hebrew, a small stroke (waw) separates the narration.

*Important insight:*

This line does not mean Samuel told Israel to go to war.

5. *God Speaks, But Israel Acts Independently*

1 Samuel 4:1 (KJV)

> “…Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle…”

This is tragic:

There is a prophet in the land.

The word of the LORD has come.

Yet Israel goes to battle without consulting Samuel or God.

6. *The Fatal Decision of the Elders.*

1 Samuel 4:3 (KJV)

> “And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

The elders bypass Samuel a younger prophet.

They treat the ark as a religious weapon, not the presence of God.

The ark is taken without divine instruction.

Religion replaces relationship.

7. *The Philistines – Historical & Military Background*

Descendants of Japheth.

Migrated from the western regions (Turkey/Europe).

Settled along the Mediterranean coast (Gaza, southern Israel).

Technologically advanced:

Iron swords

Iron chariots

Horses

Israel:

Mountain people.

Foot soldiers.

Mostly agricultural tools.

Very few swords (only Saul and Jonathan).

1 Samuel 13:22 (KJV)

> “So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan…”

8. *An Unequal and Foolish Battle*

Israelites came down into the valley, surrendering their advantage.

Philistines were disciplined, orderly, and well-equipped.

Israelites stood together like a crowd, not an army.

They were likely lured into open ground.

1 Samuel 4:2 (KJV)

> “And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.”

9. *Spiritual Lessons*

God’s word can be present, yet ignored.

Religious symbols cannot replace obedience.

The ark without God’s presence becomes powerless.

Ignoring God’s order leads to spiritual disaster.

Victory depends on divine guidance, not emotional zeal.

*The tragedy of 1 Samuel 4 is not the strength of the Philistines, but the silence of Israel toward God’s voice.*
